first night!

Tonight is my first night in my apartment! My roommates have been SOOO awesome throughout all of this. I felt dumb but I had to ask them how to use the clothes line and how to buzz people into the building and all that jazz. We all had a nice laugh about all of that.

They are letting me borrow a lot of their stuff until I get my own, including sheets and towels. They said that there is a sale going on right down the street for both of those things, so maybe I’ll be able to go tomorrow and grab some stuff!

I’m truly realizing how lucky I am to have all of this come together so well.

pre-work visit

Today Dad, Peggy, and I went to CEIP Padre Poveda to see the school and meet some teachers/staff before I start work tomorrow morning. Getting there wasn’t hard at all and everyone was SO nice!! I didn’t know where to go or anything, so I rang the bell and I just hoped that whoever answered would know where to send me when they buzzed me in.

I got to meet a few people that I will be working with and I got to see some of the kids in the hallway. They were so adorable! All of the younger kids and their teachers were wearing smocks and that made Dad really excited. He said that he hopes that I will have to wear one too… I asked the bilingual coordinator and she said that I could if I wanted to, but I didn’t have to. Pictures of that to come… haha

After checking out the school we walked towards my apartment and checked out the neighborhood (Prosperidad). The walk to my school from the apartment is probably about 15 minutes and I stay on the same two roads the whole time. Pretty convenient I must say! I’m so excited to meet more people tomorrow and to start working with the kids!!

la huelga general

Today is the “Huelga General” in Spain (widespread strike). Being very close to a major roadway and being in the center of the city makes us veryyyy close to the action. The strike started at midnight, and boy did it start! There was a huge group of people marching down the street right underneath our window holding banners and chanting as loud as they could. It was really interesting to see! I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. The protests and demonstrations are said to be peaceful, but there is no telling what will happen with so many people bunched up together, so I’m just trying to avoid them altogether.

Maybe I’ll catch a few photos and run away? 🙂

leaving toledo and moving on

This morning we left Toledo, but we stopped for photos just before leaving for Talavera de la Reina.

Talavera was disappointing because we didn’t really see a lot of talavera around or even many ceramics shops that weren’t for sale/rent. We asked a guy at lunch about the missing talavera and he said that because of “la crisis” many people couldn’t stay in business and they were closing their shops. The ones that were open for business were closed for “siesta” (2-5PM) so we didn’t really see anything by the time we got into town and ate.  We DID see a few things though…

This was the back of a bench in the middle of a plaza. I really like the blue on white.

After Talavera we headed for Segovia. Segovia is so beautiful! There are Roman aqueducts still standing in the city and they are really breath-taking.

Also while we were in Segovia, Dad and I decided to indulge in one of the city’s famous dishes -cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig). It was kinda scary looking, but really good! I would recommend it to people that won’t get creeped out by a foot on their plate 😉

Tomorrow we head back to Madrid and I’ll move my stuff into my apartment soon! I’m going to stay with my dad at least tomorrow night, but I haven’t decided what to do afterward. We are going to explore my new neighborhood together Wednesday or Thursday, so that should be pretty cool!

Until next post…

toledo

Today we went to Toledo! We wanted to catch the train, but we just missed it! So we rented a cute little Ibiza instead (only 86 euros for 2 days!!). We walked around a lot, and I took a nap after lunch. When we went to eat dinner, the sun was just setting and it was so pretty! Toledo at night looks really cool too!

We’re moving on in the morning, but I have no clue where we are going… I guess I’ll find out?

today’s adventures

I haven’t really had a lot of time to fill in the blanks about my trip thus far, so I’m using this time to do a recap! 🙂

We left Atlanta on Wednesday around 7PM and arrived in Madrid around 10AM. Getting through customs was so fast! The agent didn’t even ask us any questions… that was weird since I’m used to the mini-interrogation at customs. We got our bags pretty quickly and we took a cab to Gran Vía where our hotel is. The ride over was pretty awkward and funny at the same time. We get into the cab and the driver has a 70s/80s/90s hits station playing and we heard Lionel Richi AND No Doubt on the same ride. Awesomeeee! We also passed a billboard of Dad’s favorite king.

He’s fatter in Spain apparently.

We got to the hotel and our room wasn’t ready, so we went to find a place to eat. We ate at a sidewalk cafe close by and we discovered what we call “Hooker Alley.” On this BUSY, normal street there are prostitutes everywhere!! They aren’t even subtle either. I saw them grabbing guys’ arms and trying to get them to talk to them to strike up a deal. We saw one that I was 90% sure was really a man. Good times.

I got my cell phone and went to orientation after our room was ready and then I spent the whole day in orientation on Friday. After orientation I met Dad and Peggy in the metro and we went to check out an apartment in the Prosperidad neighborhood. The apartment was really nice, but the 2 girls that live there were better. They were so sweet! They were patient with us, because I had to do a lot of translating for Dad and Peggy. I move in early next week and it’s only 15 minutes walking from one of my schools! I’m sure that I’ll buy some good walking shoes before I start doing that…

I went to the calle Serrano opening festival today and Retiro park. I did sooo much walking! Look who we found!

Was that recap good enough? 🙂

i’m in madrid, for real! with a post about it finally…

Okay so I’ve  been in Madrid for 2 days and I still haven’t really seen much of the city because of orientation and all of that jazz. I’m really to settle in and start exploring!

I found a room for rent in a shared apartment very close to one of my schools. I went to check it out and the girls were soooo nice. I had to take it! My commute for half of the week will be about 15 minutes on foot. That’s awesome!!

I haven’t made too many friends yet, but I’m sure that I will once I settle into my aparment early/mid week.

Pictures of the apartment to come!

estoy en madrid!

I’m here!! More to come later…

tomorrow

In almost exactly 24 hours I’ll be on the plane with my dad and step-mom heading to Madrid. It’s definitely crunch time right now and I’m feeling a lot of pressure to get everything done and still have time to relax and not stress out so much. I’m still not happy with the things that I’ve picked out to bring for the kids in my classes (considering that I only have candy so far to bring…), so I really need to crack down on that tonight and tomorrow… anyone have any advice? I was thinking about getting some photos printed of my family members and my house etc, but I decided that I will just make a powerpoint instead since I have plenty of photos on my laptop already.
