thanksgiving in madrid

Here are some photo highlights of my Thanksgiving celebration in Madrid…

The turkey. Finding a turkey in Madrid isn’t sooo hard… it’s just finding one that isn’t 18kg (just under 40 lbs) or another way-to-big size that can be an issue. This turkey was big, but not toooo big!

Our food. Biscuit, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn bread/caserole, green bean caserole, and turkey!

love affair

Jackie and I were talking today and we decided that we both have a serious love affair… with cooking American food here in Spain. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t feel so different when I can make something so typically “homey” here. Finding certain ingredients and mastering the use of ancient cooking equipment (without lighting ourselves on fire) is truly a game for us now. The moment we find some elusive ingredient (aka REAL pancake syrup) we have a mini celebration and we cook! I started this monster, and it grows every week! It started with pancakes, but it’s snowballing into more complicated fare. For instance, Jackie made chicken-fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy today, and I’m planning my next big “American” meal as we speak (TBD).

comfort food weekend

This weekend was very “American” food oriented, and it was great! Jackie and I went to an American store in town and we bought baking soda and powder (since they are hard to come by) for making different things, some pancake syrup, bisquick, Mexican salsa, POPTARTS!!, and a few other items that we’ve been missing.

Jackie spent the night on Saturday and I made pancakes in the morning. They were just like the ones I make at home! It was nice, and it made me feel like I was at home.

The next step is to make some biscuits! Before I do that, I want to find an oven thermometer. The oven I have in the apartment is so old that it either never had the degrees on the knob, or they have been worn off. Who knows? Baking is precise though, so I don’t want to just hope for the best and crank up the dial. More to come on the baking front, I’m sure!
